6,364 Challenges Reported

6,364 challenges were reported to or recorded by the Office for Intellectual Freedom from 1990 to 2000.

  • 1,607 were challenged as “sexually explicit” materials
  • 1,427 for the use of “offensive language”
  • 1,256 considered “unsuited to age group”
  • 842 with an “occult theme”
  • 737 considered “violent”
  • 515 for “promoting homosexuality”
  • 419 for “promoting a religious viewpoint”

For every 1 challenge reported up to 5 are not reported.
